Bernardine A Dickman

A Native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Bernie is a graduate of Xavier University where she earned a degree in Elementary Education and was captain of the women’s swim team, earning Swimmer of the Year three consecutive seasons.

Bernie began her coaching career in 1985 as head coach of Madeira Swim and Tennis Club in Cincinnati, where she coached the team to two PPSL Silver Division Rec League titles. In 1991 Bernie joined the coaching staff of the CAC Seahawks, a USA club team.  Bernie worked with the leadership of the program to help grow the age group program.  During her tenure with CAC, the team saw its first Junior National qualifiers.  In 1993 the Dickman family relocated to Indiana where Bernie went on to be the founder and head coach of the SIYMCA/Batesville YMCA Stingrays.  In addition to setting up the team, parent advisory committee and coaching staff and securing funding, Bernie coached the Stingrays to 4 consecutive undefeated SEISA Conference seasons and titles. The team also produced several IHSAA state finalists, USA JO Age group qualifiers and Champions, YMCA National qualifiers, and a Junior National qualifier under her leadership. 

Bernie became Head Age Group Coach for the Countryside YMCA Torpedoes in Lebanon, Ohio in 2005 and over the course of her career with the Torpedoes she coached many first-time YMCA National Qualifiers, OSHAA state qualifiers, including an OSHAA state champion in the women’s 100yd Fly, and her groups won age group high point at the SWOYSL AA Championships from 2009-2015. In 2013 Bernie served as part of the Long Course YMCA National Championship team coaching staff.   In 2016 Bernie joined the coaching staff at Coffman Family YMCA as the Head Age Group Coach.  At the SWOYSL championships her groups posted over 90% on best times, and had 4 new Great Lakes Zone qualifiers.  She also had the pleasure of working with the team’s head coach in the coaching of the team’s Olympic Time Trial qualifier.

Recently, Bernie was selected to be part of the 2017 American Swim Coach Association’s(ASCA) Fellows class.  She, along with 4 other coaches, has been tasked with the project of looking at “The American Swim Team” and doing a SWOT analysis of the health of competitive swimming in America.  She will be working with, and mentored by, many of the country’s current and former coaching greats, including this year’s Olympic coaches Bob Bowman and David Marsh.   

Bernie is a certified by YMCA, USA, NISCA and OHSAA Swimming.   She is also ASCA Level 4 certified. Her philosophy on competitive swimming is simple: Practice cannot make perfect as no one is perfect. Practice makes habits… PRACTICE the CORRECT HABITS!

Ken Berardi

 Ken Berardi was a founding member and captain of the Hanover/Rockland High School swim team where he swam sprint freestyle in individual and relay events. He went on to swim sprint freestyle for Bridgewater State University where he further learned the art of swimming technique. Ken is also a veteran South Shore YMCA employee and applies his passion for swimming as a coach, swim instructor, and aquatic supervisor.

Suzanne Hughes

Suzanne coaches both the Age Jr. and Gold Squads at Mill Pond.  She graduated from The University of Vermont where she worked as a lifeguard and taught swimming lessons during the summers. Her interest in swimming was renewed when the oldest of her two children joined the Strypers.  She eventually left a career as a Software Engineer to spend more time with her family and began working as a lifeguard at the Mill Pond YMCA. More recently she has taken on the role of Swim Team Administrator at Mill Pond.  A regular swimmer in the Masters Program as well as a certified USA Swimming Official, she is excited to continue her involvement with The Strypers.

Andy Noble

Andy began a career in Professional triathlon in 1990. Racing in Australia 4months of the year and France 6months of the year. Some highlights included being contracted for a nationally televised triathlon series in Australia for 6 years, a contract to a French Triathlon club for 8 years and representing Australia in the sport of Professional  Duathlon (run/bike/run) at the World Championships 5 separate times including two 3rd placings and a 1st place finish in 1996. Andy won the USA Triathlon Series in 1999 and moved to live permanently in the US in 2000. Andy's swim coaching began as the head coach of the Weymouth Club Master's swim team in the fall of 2000 where he coached for 10years. After the birth of his two girls he began coaching master's at Quincy YMCA and then switched to coaching senior II Strypers for two years and now coaches the Senior I group and also Summer Strypers.

Doreen Manna

Doreen was a competitive swimmer in high school and college.   Previous to coming to coach for the Strypers Doreen was the Associate Aquatic Director at HealthTrax in Hanover MA and at the South Suburban YMCA in Newton MA.   She has coached several swimmers to obtain scholarships to college as well as be ranked in the Top 5 New England for age group swimmers.  Doreen has a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science with a certificate to teach K – 12 Physical Education in Massachusetts.  She is a Level 2 USA Certified Swim Coach and has been coaching the SSYS Summer Swim Team, Age Group and Senior 2 Squads.   Doreen was an intern at the South Shore YMCA in Quincy during her time in college where she was a personal trainer under the direction of Wayne Westcott.   She is a certified Yoga instructor as well as an American Red Cross certified coach, lifeguard and swim instructor. 

 

Candace Angle

Candy was brought to the SSYMC to coach the master’s team.  She was then brought on board with the Strypers, to develop the young swimmers.  Candy spent over 10 years racing Triathlon professionally. She was the 2002 Xterra World Champion.  Sponsors included Speedo, Saucony, PowerBar, Oakley, Aquaman and Fuji Bikes.

Tripp Kelly

Tripp currently coaches Age Jr and Age Group at Emilson and has also worked with our spring stroke clinic. Tripp is currently a student at Masssasoit Community college where he studies Media Communications with a focus in TV, Film and Radio. Tripp works as a lifeguard, Swim instructor, and a supervisor on top of coaching at the Y. Tripp is one of the only coaches with a TV Credit on a show that he worked on last spring/summer.

Elizabeth E Belmonte

Lizy coachs the gold group in hanover and this is her first year coaching. She also coached summer strypers. Lizy has been working at the YMCA for 5 years as a lifeguard and a swim instuctor. She is the best person you'll ever meet!! She pushes her kids to their full potential and always has fun in the process. You can almost always hear her yelling across the pool deck to someone or something. Lizy is full of tons of postive energy and makes for a pleasant atmosphere on the pool deck. Lizy also designed the new swim team logo.

Rophe Mason

Rophe has 14 years of professional coaching experience and has qualified multiple swimmers for Sectional and Zone level competitions. The past 5 years she has been trained by Nick Baker, a former Olympic Coach, in coaching swimmers mentally, physically and technically. She has also coached Junior Olympic and Sectional level champions. Rophe knows what skill and discipline it takes for success in the pool, having been a competitive swimmer at both the age group and collegiate level (Fairmont State University in Fairmont, WV). Rophe holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology and a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership and Development. Off the pool deck, Rophe spends her time strengthening schools in the greater Boston area through fitness and character programs. She is an avid triathlete and enjoys the challenge of endurance races. Her husband Paul, and son Elias are both excited for her to join the team!
